Bringing together the European players interested in and actively contributing to the Global Earth Observations System of Systems (GEOSS), the EuroGEO workshop 2021 focused on Earth Observation-based solutions to support the European Green Deal and shape the future development of Europe’s contribution to GEO.
The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) held its annual symposium online from 21 to 24 June 2021, with the aim to strengthen partnerships across the GEO Work Programme of Activities. Three sessions focused on ocean observations, two of which were organised by GEO’s Blue Planet Initiative.
Bringing together data providers, users and stakeholders from Europe and beyond, the conference served to showcase a EMODnet data and products resulting from a decade of progress across the EMODnet network. The EU4OceanObs action coordinators took part in EMODnet global dialogues panel.
The GEO Blue Planet EU coordinator co-hosted two side events during the All-Atlantic 2021 Conference. he side events brought experts and stakeholders together to discuss challenges and opportunities for addressing Sargassum and marine debris across the Atlantic Ocean.
On 16 April, the AIR Centre’s Networking Friday event featured the GEO Blue Planet Initiative. During the session, the GEO Blue Planet Executive Director and EU coordinator (hosted by EU4OceanObs) introduced the initiative and showcased 4 of its thematic working groups.

The GEO Blue Planet EU Office participated in the session on Marine Litter and Microplastics Mitigation and Prevention, co-hosted by the Global Partnership on Marine Litter, during the UN Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment on 19 Feb.

The second phase of the EU4OceanObs project (2023 – 2027) is funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme through a contribution agreement between the European Research Executive Agency and Mercator Ocean International. The initial project (2021 to 2023) was funded through the Partnership Instrument managed by the European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments and implemented by Mercator Ocean International.
